Recent drafting of RCPOA Roads Committee Charter was applauded for the future of better priorities, contract management, and Member oversight.
On March 11, 2019 Dax Stromberger was added to the TEAM.
On March 30, 2019, Jim Donaldson resigned from his position. Dax Stromberger was appointed chair. Prior to Jim's retirement, he and Dax surveyed 90% of the roads. The current roads report is the result of this surveying.
For transparency and clarity, we hope to begin soon on reports to our membership detailing current Roads budget, billings, and other associated financial priorities.
We are currently soliciting for a new road contractor. We will need two prices, for a project by project contract and for a time and materials contract.
Recent Invoices can be viewed here.

When the Times-Courier posted two questions on its Facebook page seeking comments about how incessant rains have affected our local roads, we got — pardon the pun — a flood of responses. There were 132 posts about roads, to be exact. Out of those, maybe one or two people noted the problem the county is up against with the wet stuff holding up any patching of potholes or other work that needs to be done.
Officials are frustrated. Chairman Charlie Paris has stated several times in the past two years that complaints about county roads are the number one issue he faces on a weekly basis. Some residents have also posted comments about being unable to see the faded white and yellow lines on our roads at night, but to be fair, some of those highways are the state Department of Transportation’s responsibility.
One woman asked us in a Facebook message, “Now that you have gathered all of these responses, what are you going to do?” We had a story planned before we asked readers their opinions on local roads, and found that county leaders do have a plan in place to address road conditions ...
If it ever stops raining.
Local weather data reveals the county received more than 14 inches of rain during the month of February. This week, a bout of extreme cold (at least for the South) will exacerbate road problems as the water that has flooded into cracks freezes and forces pavement to spew up, creating more potholes.
Be that as it may, commissioners do have a plan. Money is set aside in the 2019 budget to purchase another pothole patcher and a truck to mount it on, and more personnel will be hired to run the machinery.
As citizens, we sometimes have a tendency to complain about the local taxes we have to pay, but we also need to keep in mind that when county leaders sit down each year to plan a budget, they’re actually looking at ways to spend each dollar collected as property, sales and ad valorem taxes, among other revenue.
Now if it will only dry out ...
